Rollover To Zoom
GRW Khvanchkara Semi-Sweet Red is one of Georgia's most famous wines, a naturally semi-sweet red from the high Racha valley that Stalin famously kept on his table. Georgian Royal Wine produces this kosher bottling from the indigenous Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes, finished mevushal for shabbos.
For the cousin who says they don't like sweet wine, and then asks for a second glass.
Khvanchkara is a protected appellation in the Racha sub-region of western Georgia, made by law only from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grown on the slopes above the Rioni River. The semi-sweetness is natural, not added: cold mountain temperatures arrest fermentation before all the sugar converts, leaving the wine round and lightly sweet without being syrupy.
Tasting notes
Deep ruby in the glass. The nose carries red and black berries, a hint of violet and a wisp of sweet spice. The palate is smooth and round with a clean balance of sweetness and acidity, finishing on dark fruit and a touch of cocoa.
Pairing
Kiddush wine that everyone actually enjoys, brisket with sweet sauce, duck, chocolate desserts, or sipped on its own after the meal.
