Lagavulin 16 is the cornerstone of Diageo's Classic Malts—peated, slow-distilled, then aged sixteen years in a combination of refill American oak and European sherry casks. The marriage of smoke and dried fruit is the template every other Islay tries to chase.
Tasting notes
Pipe tobacco, dark toffee, sea spray, dried figs, peat smoke, a swirl of orange peel. Rich and oily—peat, sherry-soaked raisins, leather, espresso, smoked malt, a long current of brine. Immense and meditative—lingering smoke, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and warming oak.
Food pairing
Dark chocolate truffles, stilton, smoked brisket, or simply itself.
