Mountain Laurel Spirits revived the dormant Pennsylvania rye tradition with Dad's Hat, the first Straight Rye distilled in the state in over twenty-five years. This Bottled-in-Bond expression is a single-distillation-season pour, aged a minimum of four years in charred new oak at 100 proof — the way rye was made before Prohibition.
Mood: Spicy, deep, bonded.
Sommelier’s note
“A tip of the hat to the rye that built American whisky before Prohibition — deeper and more layered than the flagship, with dark chocolate, orange peel and vanilla caramel.”
Tasting notes
Cut grass, mint, warm baking spice, and a hint of Valencia orange lift out of the glass. Full-bodied — pepper and cinnamon spice ride over sweet grain, dark chocolate, and vanilla caramel through the middle of the palate. Long and layered, with fig, cocoa powder and a lingering rye warmth.
Pairing
Sip neat to feel the bonded weight, stir into a proper Sazerac, or pair with dark chocolate and aged sharp cheddar.
