Rollover To Zoom
Alouf is Joseph Gold's classic Israeli arak — triple-distilled from grape spirit and Mediterranean anise, following a family recipe carried through seven generations since 1824. At 100 proof, it turns milk-cloud-white with water and disappears just as fast when the meze hits the table.
Mood: cold, anise-clean, unmistakable.
SOMMELIER SAYS
“Alouf is the arak old-timers pour first — clean anise, real backbone, and the correct amount of louche the moment you add ice water.”
Tasting Notes
Aromas of star anise, fennel, and licorice root lift immediately from the glass, with a whisper of black pepper and dry herbs behind them. The palate is clean and warming — anise up front, sweet fennel through the middle, and a dry, herbaceous finish that lingers with black licorice and a touch of citrus peel.
Serving & Pairing
Serve traditionally: one part arak, one to two parts ice-cold water, over one large cube. Pairs with meze — hummus, baba ganoush, labneh, olives, grilled fish, kebabs — or anywhere you would use ouzo or sambuca.
