Rollover To Zoom
The Coalition is Shirah's signature Italian-varietal blend — Gabriel and Shimon Weiss's ode to the old-world grapes reborn on the California coast. Sagrantino, Aglianico, Freisa, and a touch of Mourvèdre from Monterey County, blended and aged like the Weiss brothers were still working in Piedmont.
Mood: Bold, aromatic, cult.
Sommelier’s note
“A Coalition of grapes most kosher drinkers have never had — and once they do, the bottle doesn't sit for a second Shabbos.”
Tasting notes
Wild cherry, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and a black-pepper lift out of the glass. Full-bodied and structured — red-fruit intensity carries the middle, chewy tannin, a smoky-spicy thread running through. Long, dark, savoury — the Italian side of California in the glass.
Pairing
Roast lamb, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheese, or a Wednesday-night steak. Also stunning with a Rosh Hashanah brisket.
