Ron Abuelo is made by Varela Hermanos in Pesé, Panama, from sugar cane the family has grown since 1908 — cane to bottle on the same estate, which very few rums can say. Aged in oak in the Panamanian heat, which does the work of far more years in a cooler climate.
Mood: Warm, sweet, tropical.
Our sommelier says
Panamanian rum is the smooth end of the category. Serve it neat or on one rock, the way you would a bourbon.
Tasting notes
Vanilla, toffee and ripe banana. Smooth and rounded across the palate with brown-sugar sweetness. A warm, caramel finish.
Food pairing
Neat, on the rocks, or in a rum old fashioned. Good with dark chocolate and with coffee.
