If you are buying one bottle of Glenfiddich, buy the 14 Year at $69.99. It is the bottle the rest of the range makes sense against, and it is the one most people actually like on the first pour. That is the short answer. The longer one is that Glenfiddich is not really a ladder the way most single malt ranges are - after the 15 it stops being about age and starts being about what barrel the whisky finished in.
Glenfiddich is Speyside, which is the soft end of Scotland. No smoke, no iodine, no peat bog. Orchard fruit, pear, honey and vanilla from the oak. The distillery has been in the same family since 1887, and the name means "valley of the deer" in Gaelic, which is why there is a stag on every bottle. It is the single malt most people meet first, and there is nothing junior about it.
What is the difference between Glenfiddich 14 and 15?

Glenfiddich 14 Year Bourbon Barrel Reserve at $69.99 spends its last stretch in deeply charred new American oak, the same wood bourbon is made in. That char is doing the heavy lifting: vanilla, toffee, brown sugar and a long sweet finish. If you like bourbon and are trying scotch, this is the bottle that will not feel like a punishment.
Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera at $84.99 is the more interesting whisky and the better one to sit with. Sherry casks, bourbon casks and new oak all go into a hand-built solera vat that is never emptied below halfway, so every bottle carries a little of every year before it. It comes out honeyed and full, with marzipan, dried fruit and cinnamon underneath.
Fifteen dollars separates them. If the bottle is for a party, buy the 14. If it is for you, buy the 15.

What does a cask finish actually change?
A finish means the whisky was moved into a second barrel for its last few months, and it takes on whatever that barrel used to hold. Glenfiddich pushes this further than most distilleries, and the three finished bottles here are genuinely three different drinks.
Glenfiddich Experimental IPA Cask at $79.99 was the first whisky finished in casks that had held a beer brewed on purpose for the job. Three months in them and the malt comes out with green hops, citrus zest and a soft bitterness on the end. Pour it for someone who says all scotch tastes the same and watch the argument stop.
Glenfiddich 21 Year Gran Reserva at $299.99 goes into hand-picked Caribbean rum casks for four months after twenty-one years in oak. Banana, fig, dried mango, ginger. It is the most tropical scotch most people will ever taste, and it is the bottle to open when the evening is going to be long.
Glenfiddich 23 Year Grand Cru at $349.99 finishes in French cuvee oak from Champagne country, and it does something no other whisky on our shelf does - it lifts. Pear, brioche, vanilla custard, candied lemon peel, and a brightness that has no business being in a twenty-three-year-old malt. This is an engagement bottle, not a Tuesday bottle.
Is the 19 Year Age of Discovery worth $449.99?
Only if you already know you love the 15. The 19 Year Age of Discovery sits in deep-char bourbon casks for nineteen years and comes out silky, with vanilla, caramel and dried fruit stacked deep. It is beautiful. It is also the same flavour family as the 14, taken as far as it will go.
What you are paying for at the top of this range is refinement and rarity, not a new experience. If it is a milestone gift and the person will know what they are holding, it is a wonderful bottle. How does Glenfiddich compare to Glenlivet, Macallan and the rest?
Speyside malts are close cousins, and the differences are real but small compared to the gap between any of them and an Islay.

How should I drink it?

Then add water a few drops at a time - a little opens a Speyside malt up noticeably, and too much flattens it. Ice mutes things rather than ruining them, so if that is how you enjoy it, enjoy it. If you are building a highball with soda, use the 14 and leave the 15 in the glass.
