Wine for Sukkos: What to Buy for a Week of Meals
Sukkos 2026 runs from the evening of Friday September 25 through Sunday October 4, and it is the longest stretch of yom tov meals in the year. Two days of yom tov, five days of chol hamoed, then Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah at the end. Buy for it once, properly, and you will not be making a wine run in the middle of chol hamoed.
The other thing that makes Sukkos different: you are eating outside, usually with guests, often with people wandering in for a quick l'chaim. That changes what to buy, not just how much.
How much wine do you actually need for Sukkos?
Count meals, not days. A typical household runs two yom tov meals on each of the first two days, a meal or two on most chol hamoed days, then two more on Shmini Atzeres and two on Simchas Torah. That is comfortably a dozen sittings.
The working rule is roughly half a bottle per adult drinking at a meal, plus a bottle for kiddush wherever kiddush is being made. For a family of four hosting a few guests across the whole yom tov, two cases is not an overestimate. That is exactly why buying by the case makes sense for this one - the per-bottle price drops and you stop thinking about it.
| What it is for | Roughly how much | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Kiddush, all nine days | 3 to 4 bottles | Sweet Concord or Moscato, 1.5L where you can |
| Yom tov meals | 6 to 10 bottles | A dry red and a dry white, mid-price |
| Chol hamoed and drop-in guests | 4 to 6 bottles | Easy-drinking, mevushal, nothing precious |
| Simchas Torah | 2 to 3 bottles | Whatever gets poured fast and cheerfully |
Buy mevushal for Sukkos, more than any other yom tov
This is the single most practical piece of advice for Sukkos specifically. The sukkah is a public-facing room. Neighbours come by, guests you did not plan for sit down, and somebody who is not shomer Shabbos will end up pouring. Mevushal wine takes the entire question off the table for nine days.
Mevushal used to mean a real drop in quality. It does not now. Teperberg Vision Cabernet Sauvignon and Barkan Classic Cabernet Sauvignon are both mevushal, both around thirteen to fifteen dollars, and both perfectly good on a yom tov table. Cape Jewel Reserve Chardonnay covers the white side at sixteen.
What to pour for kiddush in the sukkah
Kiddush gets made a lot over Sukkos, and it is usually made for a mixed group including children. Sweet still wins here. Bartenura Moscato is the blue bottle everybody knows, light and low in alcohol, which matters when you are making kiddush twice a day.
For a big table, buy the large format. Kesser Concord Grape in 1.5L at sixteen dollars and Manischewitz American Concord Grape in 1.5L both pour a lot of cups for the money. Browse the full kiddush wine range if you want to compare.
The meal wines: one red, one white, nothing fussy
Yom tov meals over Sukkos are long and warm, and the food is usually the same repertoire as Shabbos - chicken, brisket, kugel, soup. Two bottles open is enough.
Reds
Baron Herzog Jeunesse Cabernet Sauvignon at about thirteen dollars is the crowd bottle - soft, slightly sweet, and nobody objects to it. For something properly dry, Carrement Merlot or the Chateau Les Riganes Bordeaux in 1.5L for a full table. The whole kosher red wine range is worth a scroll before you commit to a case.
Whites
Sukkos is still early autumn and the sukkah is often warm, so cold white gets drunk faster than you expect. Gamla Chardonnay and Marquis de Greyssac Bordeaux White both sit under twenty dollars. A dry rosé is arguably the best sukkah wine of all - it drinks cold, it goes with everything on the table, and it does not need a serious glass.
A note on serving wine outdoors
Wine warms up fast in a sukkah, even in late September. Keep the whites and rosé in the house and bring them out per meal rather than leaving them on the table. Reds are better slightly cool here than at room temperature - twenty minutes in the fridge before the meal is not a mistake, it is the correct move for an outdoor room.
And buy a few more bottles than the arithmetic says. Sukkos is the yom tov where guests arrive unannounced, which is rather the point of it.
Already sorted for Rosh Hashanah?
Sukkos comes two weeks after Yom Kippur, so most people buy for the whole of Tishrei in one go. If you have not done the first half yet, our Rosh Hashanah wine guide and the Yom Kippur break-fast guide cover it. Order the whole of Tishrei together and it ships once.
